Sample Collection
and Turn Around Time

Istologi guarantees rapid reporting times (TAT, Turnaround Time), evaluated from the acceptance of the sample in our laboratory to the signing of the report. 90% of cases in Istologi are reported within 5 working days.

Sample Collection
Istologi ensures that private clinics and hospitals receive properly traced sample retrieval.
The container must be labelled with:

  • Patient’s personal details
  • The type of material and site of collection
  • The request form, fully completed including the date, must be attached separately to the container.

Important Note: The tissue must be immersed in 4% formalin; additional fixative solution must be added to prevent desiccation of small samples.
It is necessary to ensure that the sample is not placed in alcohol solution, as its fixative power is insufficient. In no case should fragments be wrapped in gauze.

The Team

Istologi was founded by Dr. Giulio Ferranti with the vision of establishing a modern and dependable reference centre for anatomical pathology, specifically specialising in dermatopathology. Our mission is to deliver meticulous, precise and timely services, catering to both patients and clinical practitioners, while fostering a spirit of collaboration, transparency and diagnostic excellence.
At the core of Istologi lies its multidisciplinary team, comprising of highly experienced pathologists. Each member possesses specialised training and a strong commitment to providing accurate and in-depth diagnoses. This professional collaboration facilitates continuous peer review and ongoing scientific advancement.
Complementing our pathologists is our dedicated technical team, composed of highly qualified operators. They expertly and precisely manage the preparation of histological and cytological samples, thereby ensuring an elevated standard of technical and operational quality.
Collectively, we integrate expertise, cutting-edge technology and unwavering dedication to provide a robust and clear diagnostic pathway, ultimately serving the health and well-being of every individual.

      Histological Sample Processing

      Sample Acceptance on Management System

Once the sample is checked-in, the system verifies that the paperwork matches the sample information. Any discrepancies will be addressed promptly by contacting the client. All samples must be entered into the J-LAB management system; the acceptance slip and labels with barcodes for container identification are printed. The labels are placed on.

      Biopsy Collection

The pathologist performs the sample reduction and collection, placing them in special cassettes. The cassette is immediately labeled with the sample’s identification number in the following format: year – system identification number – sample number. After collection, the pieces are stored in a container with formalin and archived. Any remaining tissue is stored neatly by date and number in a designated room. After 30 days, these samples are disposed of as potentially infectious hazardous waste.

      Paraffin Embedding and Slide Preparation

The sample is embedded in paraffin to form a block, which is then sliced to prepare slides. The block number is noted on each slide, and the patient’s last name is added to the first slide of each series.
      Traceability Check and Block Storage
Once all slides are prepared for each patient, a traceability check is carried out to ensure the identification number on the slides matches the block and accompanying documents. Blocks are stored in order in a dedicated drawer for temporary storage. Once full, blocks are packed in boxes of 100, labeled with the first and last block number. The boxes are stored in a special room for 10 years.
